Drive the 15 or the 78 on an afternoon in late July and the shredded tread on the shoulder tells the story clearly enough.

What makes blowouts worth writing about, rather than treating as bad luck, is how preventable they are. A tire almost never fails without warning. It gives notice through low pressure, uneven wear, sidewall cracking, or simple age, and every one of those is visible in a five-minute check. Losing a tire at 70 miles per hour with a loaded car is one of the more dangerous things that can happen on a freeway, and the effort required to prevent it is genuinely small.

Why Do Tire Blowouts Happen More in Summer?

Blowouts happen in summer because heat is what destroys tires, and summer supplies it from three directions at once: hot ambient air, pavement that can be considerably hotter than the air above it, and internal friction from the tire flexing as it rolls. When those combine, temperatures inside the tire structure can climb high enough to break down the bond between the rubber and the steel belts.

Underinflation is the accelerant. A tire that is low on air flexes more with each rotation, and that flexing generates heat internally. The sidewalls work harder, the tread squirms, and the heat concentrates in the shoulder area where the belts are anchored. Push that far enough and the tread separates from the carcass, which is what a blowout actually is in most cases. It is a structural failure from accumulated heat damage, not simply a puncture.

Load compounds everything. A vehicle packed for a summer trip with passengers, luggage, and gear puts more weight on each tire, which increases flex, which increases heat. This is exactly why blowouts cluster around holiday travel and why the failures happen on long freeway stretches rather than around town. A tire needs sustained high-speed running to build up the heat that kills it.

How Do You Check Tire Pressure Correctly?

Check pressure when the tires are cold, meaning the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours or driven less than a mile, and set it to the value on the placard inside the driver's door jamb rather than the number molded into the sidewall. That sidewall number is the tire's maximum, not the correct pressure for your vehicle.

The cold-tire requirement trips people up. Driving heats the air inside the tire, and heated air expands, so a tire checked after a freeway run may read four to six PSI higher than it actually is at rest. Setting pressure from that reading leaves the tire underinflated once it cools, which is the condition that causes the damage in the first place.

Do not bleed air out because the pressure reads high after driving. Tire engineers designed the specification with that expansion in mind, and releasing it creates the underinflation you were trying to avoid. The only reading that matters is the cold one.

Check monthly at minimum, and before any long trip. Tires lose roughly one PSI per month through normal permeation, and more as temperatures swing. A tire that was correct in April can easily be five PSI low by July with nothing wrong with it.

What Should You Look For on the Tire Itself?

A visual inspection catches problems a pressure gauge cannot. Walk around the vehicle and look at each tire deliberately:

  • Tread depth measured in three places across the tire: inside, center, and outside. The legal minimum in California is 1/32 inch, but handling in wet conditions deteriorates well before that, and replacement around 4/32 inch is the practical recommendation
  • Uneven wear patterns. Wear on both edges indicates chronic underinflation, wear in the center indicates overinflation, and wear on one edge points to an alignment problem
  • Sidewall cracking, the fine spiderweb pattern that develops from UV exposure and age. Southern California sun accelerates this significantly
  • Bulges or blisters, which indicate internal structural damage, usually from a pothole or curb impact. A bulging tire should be replaced immediately, not monitored
  • Embedded debris, including nails and screws that have not yet caused a noticeable leak
  • Cupping or scalloped wear, which usually points to worn shocks or struts rather than a tire problem

Tread depth is easy to check with a quarter. Insert it into the tread groove with Washington's head down. If the tread does not reach the top of his head, you are at roughly 4/32 inch and should be shopping for tires.

Does Tire Age Matter If the Tread Looks Fine?

Tire age matters independently of tread depth, and this is the factor drivers most often miss. Rubber compounds degrade chemically over time whether the tire is driven or not. Oils in the compound migrate out, the rubber hardens, and the bond between the rubber and the internal steel belts weakens. A tire with plenty of tread can be structurally unsound purely because of age.

You can read the manufacture date from the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits give the week and year: a code ending in 2419 means the twenty-fourth week of 2019. Most manufacturers recommend replacement at six years, and virtually all consider ten years the hard limit regardless of appearance.

This applies with particular force to spare tires and to vehicles that are driven infrequently. A spare mounted under a truck bed for a decade may look untouched and be entirely unsafe. Low-mileage vehicles are the classic case: a car driven 3,000 miles a year can easily reach eight years on its original tires with most of the tread remaining, and those tires are past their service life.

Sun exposure accelerates all of it. Vehicles parked outside in North County get significant daily UV exposure, and that shortens usable tire life compared with cars kept in garages.

What Should You Do During a Blowout?

Grip the steering wheel firmly with both hands and resist the instinct to brake. A blowout creates sudden drag on one corner of the vehicle, and hard braking transfers weight forward and unsettles the car further, which is how a manageable situation becomes a loss of control.

Ease off the accelerator and let the vehicle slow on its own. Keep it pointed straight while speed comes down. Once you are at a controllable speed, signal, steer gently toward the shoulder, and brake lightly to stop. Get well clear of traffic before considering anything else.

Practicing this mentally has real value, because the correct response is counterintuitive. Every instinct says brake, and braking is the wrong move. Knowing that in advance is what makes the difference in the two seconds you have to act.

What Else Affects Tire Wear and Safety?

Tires wear as a function of the systems that hold them, so premature or uneven wear is often a symptom rather than the problem. Alignment is the most common culprit. Hitting a pothole or curb knocks the wheel angles out of specification, and a misaligned vehicle scrubs rubber off the tire with every mile while also pulling to one side and hurting fuel economy.

Worn shocks and struts cause cupping, the scalloped wear pattern that comes from the tire bouncing rather than staying planted. That bouncing also lengthens stopping distances and reduces grip in emergency maneuvers, which makes it a safety issue well beyond the tires.
